Winton Friendship Club’s members enjoy a melodious day along with the ‘’Sing-Along’’ sisters

Updated: Mar 30, 2020

A local passionate trio had entertained the 25 members of the Winton Friendship Club by singing and chanting to old songs of the past.

The event took part at the YMCA Winton from 2-3pm on the 25th of February. The sisters aimed to entertain the elderly through their old-time hits but also to raise money for St Michael’s House, a homeless shelter in Bournemouth.

Songs such as ‘’Sisters’’ by Bette Middler or ‘’When I’m sixty-four’’ by The Silver Beatles were melodies that helped the group cheer and set in the nostalgic, joyful feeling in the room.

As the regular club’s volunteer, Sue Steele stated, events like this benefit the older people.

She said: " I think whatever activity we do, benefits. They get to meet other people and to get out of the house."

" There are a lot of elderly people who get very lonely and don’t go out so these [events] once a week, they’ve got something to come to" added Sue.

Sue has been coming here, helping run the club for eight years and has always enjoyed it: "I do like it, otherwise I wouldn’t be coming back".

When asked about the benefits these activities bring, she added: " Numbers have stayed pretty high over the eight years I’ve been here. I think quite 700 people have benefited I would say’’.

Other activities run by the adult-social club are quizzes, crafts afternoons, dancing, talks bingo as well as seated exercises.
